Umpiring Quotes
When we were kids, we'd go to the playground, choose up sides and act as our own umpires. With the umpiring historically bad, maybe the players' union could implement this idea.
- Barry Newman
When I was 14, I played in a summer league. One night the chief umpire asked me if I would like to try umpiring. There was a Little League tournament coming up and he needed more umpires than he had.

We've moved on as a team. What's really sad about it, and I think everybody will agree, is that this umpiring crew is a great crew. We like this umpire crew. I've been listening to the radios and everything, and I haven't heard any really positive things about what's going on. ... He's done a great job. I just hope all this doesn't become nasty today.

We've moved on as a team. This is a good umpiring crew ? even the umpire that's gone through all of this. He's done a great job. I just hope all this doesn't become nasty today.

We need to take this stand. It's been a long time coming for Minor League umpires. We all have a passion for umpiring. It'd be crazy to just go out there and get yelled at, but we love umpiring. Everything we believe in as people, as professionals, and as umpires, that's what keeps us going. We have integrity as umpires.
- Jason Klein
Umpiring was more of a side job for my father. Matter of fact, most of the guys, they still had to work regular jobs when the season was over. They had to work as bartenders. Some were lucky enough to be coaches, some had to work in factories. They started to work other jobs to supplement their incomes.
- Byron Motley
Umpiring of baseball has been around since Day 1 and some calls are missed, but most of the time they get it right... Instant replay in baseball? I don't know if it is ever going to be such a plus that is should be a part of our game. There are plays that are going to be bang bang. But you have to absorb that and play good baseball.
- Mike Scioscia
There always are going to be calls that go your way and calls that go against you. I don't think umpiring in these games is why we're behind 3-1.
- Mike Scioscia
The umpiring is an absolute joke. That?s the bottom line. It is absolutely not professional baseball that we?re playing out there. This game can get turned around on one pitch. I?m not saying professional umpires don?t miss pitches -- obviously, they do. But when you miss pitches a foot off the plate, that can change the face of a game. You guys can see it from up in the press box. You guys should call the game up there.
